It is like building a fire, really…

  

The word detox has, not only been overused but has also been abused.   Even the manufacturers of a popular cereal (loaded with sugar and other unmentionables) if eaten every morning for a few days with cold milk will detox you!

In Ayurveda, the human being is an integral component of the universe around it and as such it has to ensure a certain resonance with it.   So, when the seasons are about to change, it is the right time to spring-clean the body to enable you to adapt to the change in the weather, more specifically, the change in the predominance of the elements.

The winter in the Cape, wet and cold, makes way for hot and dry.  Winter moves into summer via spring.   To move from these opposing elements one has to first clean up completely so that the body is receptive to the predominance of the new ruling elements.

It is no mystery why people get runny noses in winter.   Our predominant elements of fire during summer makes way for the predominance of water.

In Ayurveda, the dance between the quality of your metabolic fire and the efficiency of your elimination is integral to our state of health.   The spring-clean then entails cleaning out the fire place so that you can start building a new, more effective one.   If you follow this analogy throughout your program you will find that it will help you understand the process and consequently assist you in seeing it through.

There are different degrees of cleaning your system as there are different methods and degrees of spring-cleaning the home.   The Ayurvedic way provides you with a thorough cleanse reaching the deepest levels of your physiology.   These “springcleans” not only have an effect on your physical body but also on your emotional and emotional “bodies”.

The process entails taking ghee (clarified butter) which softens the toxins (AMA), carries them through to the digestive tract where after they get eliminated.    The ghee, in the right quantity, also has the effect of putting out the metabolic fire.    In the days that you administer the ghee you only eat simple, pure, cooked foods which are easy to digest.   There is no point in eating raw fruit and vegetables at this time, even though they are healthy, as your digestive power is greatly diminished at this time and these foods will not be digested.

The elimination follows the ghee process to continue with the fire analogy; now that you have put the fire out it is time to clean out the fireplace.   This involves administering either castor oil or Epsom salts in quantities specifically determined for you.

Once your bowels are empty and clear the fire has to be re-set and re-ignited.   As you would not start a fire with a huge log, so you would not start your first meal with heavy, hard to digest food.    Instead small amounts of easily digestible and warm food would be appropriate.   Gradually as you build up your fire so do you start introducing more complex foods, such as protein.

What can you expect from an Ayurvedic springclean?  

Initially you will feel the ordinary symptoms associated with the deprivation of stimulants which your body has gotten used to. Gradually you will notice a clarity of thought , a stability in your emotional state, a fluidity of speech, a brightness of look. After the elimination, your taste buds come alive upon the intake of your first meal and you will clearly feel the heating and energizing effect of food as it digests.

You will also find that you have become capable of discerning the difference between hunger and appetite.   This is aided by the fact that, if you eat before the ghee has digested properly, you will feel nauseous and realize that what you felt was “appetite pangs”.

This article will not provide you with a detox program as to do so would be irresponsible.   There are many which are available to suit you as an individual, taking your lifestyle into account as much as possible.   However, a detox program must be used in a responsible manner as it is, in effect, medication.   Its effects are thorough and intense and accordingly a specific program should only be prescribed by a person qualified to do so.

Even if you do not undergo an Ayurvedic detox, it is imperative that you remember that a detox is to be taken seriously as its psycho-physiological effects are powerful.   Should it not be done properly it can have an adverse effect on your health, defeating the very purpose for which it was intended.

A comprehensive Ayurvedic detox usually also comprises external oleation in the form of massages and mild sweating, light exercise and the promotion of quiet contemplative time.   An Ayurvedic detox is easily achievable if you just take the time out to properly rejuvenate your physical and ethereal bodies, ready for the new season.

Children’s Yoga

Children today are under a great deal of stress and their bodies show it. Yoga not only stretches and lengthens their muscles releasing built up tension and stimulating their internal organs, it also gives them the necessary tools to deal with every day pressures and moods. Particular postures such as the tree and the warrior instill a sense of calm, confidence and equilibrium. Holding of asanas(postures) provide them with strength and endurance. The children will soon learn the importance of stretching before doing any form of exercise.

Yoga gives children the opportunity to respond to quiet time, to connect with and become aware of their bodies, breath and internal universe. This useful tool is carried beyond the class.

To retain their attention Hindu mystic stories are told about the origin of the asanas.

At the end relaxation is encouraged through visualizations which they can relate to allowing their energies to settle and their mind to focus. Often they are encouraged to imagine being in their favourite place and observe how they feel in it.

Sometimes relaxation entails sitting quietly observing the gentle flame of a ghee lamp. They become so still and peaceful that it fortifies my belief that children yearn to move into their own quiet place.

AYURVEDA: Spice Up Your Winter

It is quite evident how, with the onset of autumn, the elements which make up the natural world ie. ether, air, water, fire and earth, start undergoing major changes in their proportions.  So, in Cape Town we particularly notice how the fire element (summer) makes way for water and earth (the kapha elements of winter).  In view of the fact that we are made up of the very same elements of nature it follows that, metaphysically, with the onset of autumn our fire element starts to melt and water and earth begin to predominate.

 As a direct consequence of this very real change our physical bodies start manifesting the water element in runny noses, congested chests (the seat of kapha) and, generally the onset of a cold is almost always inevitable.  From a non-physical perspective the heavy characteristic of kapha (earth and water) is reflected in our tendency to “hibernate”.  I say “almost always” because it is indeed possible to avoid the negative impact of kapha and to enjoy winter in peak health. This article will deal specifically with colds and flu’s from the Ayurvedic perspective.

There are two essential requirements necessary to pacify the kapha element.  Firstly, one must ensure that our bodies are spring-cleaned so that they may become perfect recipients for the increase in the kapha element without in any way disturbing the harmony of the other elements thereby causing ill health.  As previously mentioned (Renaissance Oct Nov 2005 Issue 36), the change of seasons provides an ideal opportunity to undergo a thorough detoxification of body, mind and undigested  emotions.  Thereafter, it is essential to build up the immune system, support and nurture the body.  This article shall deal with this latter aspect.  

Enhancing the Immune System

The most important thing is to eat light, warm foods (this counteracts the excess of the heavy and cold characteristics of kapha), cooked with immune-enhancing spices and herbs such as cumin, fennel, coriander, turmeric, ginger, cloves and black pepper.  But more about these spices hereunder.  It is also vital to avoid drinking or eating anything cold as this intensifies the impact of cold weather and reduces the digestive fire which leads to the accumulation of ama (indigested waste matter).  Heavy, sweet foods are also difficult to digest. 

Ideally, one should start the day with a stewed apple cooked with cardamom or cinnamon.  During the day you should incorporate some of these herbs and spices which combat the cold, heavy properties of kapha :

Basil

Effective for colds, flu’s and lung problems due to its febrifuge and antibacterial properties

Black pepper

It stimulates digestion is invigorating and energizing. 

 Cloves

Enhances circulation, digestion and metabolism. Stimulates lungs and stomach. It is used with rock candy or honey for coughs, sore throats and colds.

Coriander

Detoxifies the liver, aids digestion and removes toxins from the body through the urine.

Cumin

Enhances digestion, eliminates impurities and helps to detoxify the liver. Hot cumin water is very effective for colds and fevers.

Fennel

Strengthens the fire element and is an excellent herb for digestion.

Ginger

A powerful medicine for general wellbeing.  Dry ginger acts as an expectorant while fresh ginger is better for colds.

Turmeric

Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, modulates and boosts immune system, stimulates digestion.

At the onset of a cold or flu, a teaspoon of raw honey with crushed peppercorns is an excellent boost to the system and gives you an almost instant lift.

And of course, if you are feeling all bunged up and miserable this delicious tea will speed up the healing process relieving some of the symptoms and making you feel comforted:

2 tsps grated ginger

4 cardamom seeds

8 cloves

cinnamon stick

8 cups water

Boil until only half of the liquid remains. Sweeten to taste. A little boiled milk may be added.

The good news is that Winter is an oportune time to nurture yourself.
